I never heard about stand-up comedy until I moved to the USA in 1984 where every night at 10:30 I watched the Johnny Carson show hoping to see a stand-up comic. Since then watching stand-up comedy has been tasteful, zero calorie food for my soul. Currently I reside in Israel.
