Last Thursday Yahoo! Screen Comedy Channel showed Bill Maher’s Crazy Stupid Politics live from Silicon Valley for free. This is the first installation of the Yahoo! Screen Live Standup Series, with more big names to be announced soon.
Before the show Maher tweeted, “Just for shits and giggles, what do u think my surprise announcement is at the end of #CrazyStupidPolitics?” The question prompted many of his one million followers to guess, but all failed to predict that Maher would donate one million dollars to a pro-Obama Super PAC.
His exact announcement was, “My surprise tonight is, I would like to announce a donation to the Obama Super PAC – which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name ‘Priority USA Action.’ I know, it was named by Borat. But tonight I would like to give that PAC one million dollars.” While saying one million dollars Maher mimicked Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers’ movies.
After the show Maher tweeted, “Most important advice I ever got in show business, as true today as then: always bring ur wallet onstage.” He then tweeted, “Thank u everybody who’s hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!”
You don’t have to agree with Maher but you can at least admire that he takes a stand.

About the Author: I was born in the sixties in a little country in the Middle East. I never heard about stand-up comedy until I moved to the USA in 1984 where every night at 10:30 I watched the Johnny Carson show hoping to see a stand-up comic. Since then watching stand-up comedy has been tasteful, zero calorie food for my soul. Currently I reside in Israel.
