billy crystalVeteran comedian Bill Crystal confirmed on Thursday via his Twitter page that he will host the 2012 Academy Awards in place of Eddie Murphy, who stepped down from the job.

Crystal’s affiming tweet even contained some humor: “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”

Murphy decided to leave the hosting gig after his creative partner, Brett Ratner, was forced to resign as the ceremony’s producer due to some homophobic comments he made during a question/answer session for the pair’s new movie, Tower Heist. The choice for Murphy’s replacement was “crystal” clear for Academy President, Tom Sherak, after numerous online polls established the comedian as the winner. Also in the running were comedians, Chris Rock and Ricky Gervais.

“It feels good to have him back where he belongs,” said Sherak.

Hosting the Feb. 26 ceremony will bring Crystal’s total to 10. It’s the first time since 2004 that the funny man has entertained the star-studded audience, but being considered one of the finest hosts in Academy Award history ensures his success.

Last year’s hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco were generally criticized for their lack of any real bite in their performance. The safe, yet popular decision to hire Crystal will possibly bring the ceremony back to it’s roots.
