Dane Cook Jokes about ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Shooting

Dane Cook is known for controversy surrounding his jokes, but this time the material is all his own. The comedian took the stage at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles on Thursday night and joked about the Dark Knight Rises shooting in Aurora, Colorado only a week after the event occurred.
In the clip below he says: “I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie and I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of crap. And I know that if, ya know, none of that would have happened, I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing that it was a piece of crap, was probably like ‘ugh fuckin’ shoot me.” The joke was initially met with laughs mixed in with groans of disapproval.
The Internet, a forum that has been none too kind to Cook over his past scandals has been all over the comedian’s most recent joke. Many comments on the video have voiced disapproval at either the joke or Cook himself.
YouTube user J1swag commented on Friday, “the joke was actually pretty funny, its just that the timing for it was wrong…”
Cook tweeted an apology Friday at 4:38 p.m. via Twitter: “I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims.”
The newest joke controversy comes on the heels of Daniel Tosh’s making a joke about rape in the same venue. Is the joke indeed too soon? Or is pushing boundaries and offending people just part of the stand-up comedians job? Let us know what you think.
