Darren Carter – That Ginger’s Crazy

Darren Carter, “the Party Starter,” combines collegiate rawness and hip-hop soul for a roughly hewn good time. Carter is one of those rare comedians who is still devoted to crafting and writing jokes, rather than going the storytelling route. Carter’s CD, “That Ginger’s Crazy,” reveals his multi-hued soul. He combines beat, movement and silliness with his acute observations of his own life growing up in a Latino neighborhood, marriage and the hip hop culture to create an energetic show.

Tracks, such as “Beat Box,” “Trying to Learn Spanish,” “Snoop Dog” and “Latino Neighborhood/Rooster” are clever and delightful, showcasing Carter’s intelligence and ability to connect the dots (or freckles, as the case may be).

As a redhead, his brand identity is that of the “Orange American.” “That Ginger’s Crazy” focuses a bit too heavily on Carter’s ethnicity, though, until it feels tiresome. Also, while there is a driving energy to “That Ginger’s Crazy,” Carter tends to belabor his jokes long after they’ve reached their full potential. For example, Carter’s interplay with his audience in  “I Like My Women Like I Like . . . “ went on for over nine minutes.

All said, Carter is hugely talented. “That Ginger’s Crazy” left me curious about how Carter sees life outside of ethnic, redhead-y and sexual topics. Check out the album for yourselves at www.darrencarter.com.
