In many ways, the idea of being “tough” and “funny” seems impossible. For decades the comedy ranks have been overrun with self-conscious, insecure, hypochondriacs who use comedy as a source of therapy. They’re folks seeking acceptance from strangers by venting their greatest fears and emotional scars, hoping to relate to somebody and not feel like a monster.

Rich Brockman isn’t one of those comedians. He’s just funny. A Montana native, and legitimate cowboy who grew up ranching and rodeoing, isn’t trying to make a deep emotional connection with you, he’s just trying to make you laugh, and he does.

“Hans Eberbach was born on the west coast and raised in the northeast wilds of Maine, returning to the California sunshine after highschool to launch his career in the mid ’90′s as the singer for Sacramento based roots rock band Sweet Vine. Guided by industry contact/friend Geoff Bywater (Glee) – a music supervisor at FOX, the band was barely playing live shows locally when they were signed to a publishing deal with Warner-Chappell and then to a lucrative, long-term record deal with Sony/Columbia. 

The bands vibrant, muscular mix of classic rock, blues, southern rock and jam band influences was stewed together and served up in the earthy, soul soaked vocal delivery of its charismatic front man, Hans Eberbach.”

Comedian Paul Mecurio is a talented writer and award winner, and this weekend he’ll be performing in Sacramento at the Punchline.

For his work on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Indecision 2000,” Paul was honored with a Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting (think The Pulitzer Prize for Broadcasting).

What happens when life imitates art? Comedy of course! Real comedy. The sort of comedy you can both laugh at and be afraid of at the same time!

Such is the life of comedienne Janelle Murphey. Still only in her early twenties, Janelle has hit most of the stages in and around Sacramento, as well as become a booker, setting up shows in Midtown that feature some of the funniest women the Capitol City has to offer.

Raised in a religious family in Lincoln, it was fun for us to talk to her about her first time venturing into Sacramento as a young adult, despite living just outside of the city her entire life.

We also talk to her about her process for joke writing thus far, and what her experiences have been like on and off stage working with the comedy community. Junior also steps in a giant pile of “DOH!” when the subject of a late relative is brought up, while Leo laughs maniacally at his faux pas.

Magic and comedy are far from being strange bedfellows.

They are a natural pair that when executed effectively, can result in Las Vegas shows, network specials and millions of fans thoroughly entertained. David Peters comes from a long line of respected magicians. When it came time for him to develop an “act,” he knew that infusing comedy would not only aid in engaging with audiences, but it would also set him apart from the rest of the saturated Sacramento comedy scene.

The life of a road comic is one of those tales rarely heard by the average citizen.

Ask the average comedy fan on the street, and they would be amazed at the number of professional comics making their bones doing gigs in places far away from the limelight of Hollywood or New York.

Jason Resler (@jason_resler) is one such comic. Having spent the better part of two decades honing his craft up and down the pacific northwest and beyond, Jason has earned more than a few fans, and an immense amount of respect from his comedy peers in his hometown of Sacramento.

We managed to sit down with Jason, talk about his life on the road, how he is fairing in L.A. after relocating there just last year, and what it’s been like for him to navigate the untested waters of new media and social networking.
