Todd Barry’s ‘Super Crazy’

Todd Barry, comedian, super crazy album reviewOkay, let’s be honest. Do I really even need to write this review? Do you really need to read it? If you know anything about Todd Barry, you should have already downloaded his new album Super Crazy. The man is a comedic titan! So, we should be done here right? Go do something else, seriously. This is a waste of time.  Do you really need to read a review about how great Barry’s new album is? You should know this.

You’re still here?! Jesus Christ!  Fine, let’s do this. If you are in any way, shape, or form into comedy, then you know who Todd Barry is. The New York based stand-up comedian has traveled the country for over two decades pleasing crowds with his quick-witted, monotone observations which, at this point, he has down to a science.

It’s smart, self-depreciating, and hilarious. Super Crazy covers a vast array of topics including easy going prisons, tourists, and even his own fame as a stand up. Regardless of the topic, they are all set up and knocked down in typical “Barry-esque” fashion. He starts with a blanket statement which normally takes the form of a casual observation, and then, cuts it down with misdirection and sarcasm. It’s a formula that many try to emulate but can’t even come close without Barry’s timing or intelligence.

Also, one thing that I found incredibly enjoyable about this album (and Barry’s style in general) is his ability to keep you guessing. Anyone who watches or listens to stand up comedy is always trying to subconsciously beat the comic to the punchline. You follow the lines of logic and try to reach the end before the performer does.

However, when we fail miserably doing that, it makes the punchline even funnier. The entire time I listened to Super Crazy, I always thought I knew where Barry was going but then, found myself laughing hysterically when I fell for the set up hook, line, and sinker.

Super Crazy is the exact same Todd Barry we’ve all come to admire. He’s not breaking new ground or reinventing himself. Do you know why? Because f*ck, you! It’s Todd Barry, and he doesn’t have to. The man found a style that works for him and is hilarious because of it. Anyone who is an avid Todd Barry follower will appreciate Super Crazy as will any newcomers to his almost cult-like following.  The album is 50 minutes of realizing why Todd Barry is so respected in the comedy community.

Now do you see? Did you really need to read all of that? Why are you still here? How bored are you? Go make something of yourself goddammit instead of reading things you already know. Super Crazy is available for download via iTunes, Amazon, and Rhapsody.com.
